giddy up girls!

Posted on May 17th, 2009 in Princess Wears Prada by hireheels

Unlike Gucci Gal, I’m no horsie gal, but couldn’t giddy up fast enough to post on this wonderfully inspiring story.

In one of the most amazing competitions ever witnessed, Rachel Alexandra outran her macho, co-contending colts to win the 134th Preakness Stakes yesterday at Pimlico Race Track. Spectactors watched in awe as Alexandra snagged the lead when she was halfway to the the finish.

princess_wears_prada_byline

Hardly a quirky racehorse name, “Rachel Alexandra” was named after the granddaughter of her original owner.  But he didn’t deem her worthy to compete with the ‘boys.’  It was her new owner, Jess Jackson of the famed Kendall-Jackson Vineyard, who knew she had the moxy to get the done!

This spectacularly beautiful filly deserves more than just few headlines. Though always a fave among her sister-fillies, Rachel Alexandra’s Preakness win was even grander because she was set against the ‘boys.’ But what this makes her victory so special is that she is the first filly to win the race since 1924, four years after women were given their voting rights.

How symbolic!

Indeed, the ladies were the winners yesterday, not just because so many at Pimlico placed their bets on Rachel Alexander, but because the win was earned by the best contender. Rachel Alexandra reminded us that girls do rule!

Now if we could only we could take the White House!

Gotta love Rachel Alexandra! See what the girls can do if there is a level playing field – they just leave the old boys and their network behind them and go for the prize!

Should Kendall-Jackson be our new favourite vineyard? Mmmh, let me ponder that!

speaking of old boys network, one filly who can’t please the boys enough is Mo Dowd….. a real hillary-hater!
well, I Just read on Ap breaking news that she has admitted to plagiarism. she lifted a paragraph from talking points memo’s Josh Marshall and put it in her column today.
whoaaa, mo. say it ain’t so.

Hillary Clinton’s comment made today at Barnard’s Commencement Address on Rachel Alexandra’s win.

“we’re even seeing gender barriers broken at the racetrack. (applause.) i don’t know about you, but i personally felt vindicated when rachel alexandra won the preakness, went where no filly has gone in 85 years up against 8 stallions. i can’t say i exactly identified with her – (laughter) – but i was very pleased that she brought home the black-eyed susans.

    What class!

boogie—tragically, they’re spinning stories faster than bush did…..and they blame everything on bush….”it was like this when we got here” is their mantra….. like a bunch of little 2nd graders pointing the finger of blame at everybody else.
nothing, nothing, nothing will change as long as we live in a patriarchy. period.

  23. on May 23rd, 2009 at 1:19 am

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama named federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as “an inspiring woman” with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

back bay— I figured that Obama would nominate a woman, but i was hoping for our fave, Hillary!
as far as sotomayor….I’m troubled by her comment that… “i would hope a wise Latina woman would reach a better conclusion than a white male”.
if one is honest, you have to concede, in my opinion, that that’s actually a racist and sexist remark….against whites and men. I don’t like racism or sexism used anywhere by anyone. and I’m a feminist who loves men…. shoot me!
seriously, her comment comes up short in light of the prop 8 fiasco in california. The majority of california latina women who voted in november, voted for prop 8 (and therefore against gay marriage)
    just an observation

but she hated republicans more than she loved fairness, so she voted for obama over mccain-palin. boy is she sorry now. but it’s too late, baby, as carole king’s song stated.

getting back to the original topic of this particular post (horses), maybe that will have to become our means of transport if Obama has his way about the tiny cars.
I will not drive a tiny death trap car like the ones they’re proposing…… and as someone pointed out, if you have a large family and/or lots of friends, you’d have to have two or three of those little cars to get about…….so how are you saving fuel by doing that? it’s totally preposterous!

    hope you’re all better.
and as for sotomayor…….really really bad judgment on her part, to publicly say some of the things she’s said. esp. as a sitting judge. Very sophomoric, in my opinion.

Just curious what you all think abou this. It’s a stolen quote from another blog.

    June 4th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

“I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal, but I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality,” President Obama said.

Um, all you liberal feminists out there…did you miss this quote? If a GOP member had said this, NOW would have gone berzerk, calling it insensitive and saying that many women in the Middle East do not “choose” to cover their hair, they do so out of fear of stoning.

I don’t even know what to say about this comment, and every woman in America should demand to know if this comment means that Obama will be using woman’s rights as political chips to be traded for any agreement reached.

  80. Mike in Fairfax, VA said,

    on June 5th, 2009 at 9:16 am

Please note. The whole post after the question was someone else’s. I just forgot to put in the quotation marks.

  81. Cindy said,

mike— i think it’s note-worthy that this person used the term “liberal feminists”….in my book, you’re either a feminist or you’re not.
Are there liberal racists and conservatve racists too? that’s a very telling term ( liberal feminists)
btw- i taught in fairfax co. back in early ’70’s…..wow! what a wonderful public school system

  88. Back Bay Style said,

Thanks, boogie and Cindy,, I am still recovering from my move, I think. Very exhausting. And an exhausting week, what with murders, O’s trips, GM, still this feeling that the world is falling apart on us.

Cindy, amen, one is either a feminist or not. Within that continuum, feminists have different political views on differennt issues.

RE: Sotomayer, I think it was purely a ploy for Hispanic votes on O’s part. There were several other qualified candidates. Of course, the republicans and the media would pick at anyone. I haven’t had time to read any of her opinions yet, so I can’t comment on her actual skills. It is troubling for a federal judge to make those statements, and I think, really indefensible. She should just apologize for being intemperate, and move on with the process, with assurances that she will be more careful in the future. But of course, with BO’s handlers, managing the confirmation process, they will never allow her to appoligize.

  89. Cindy said,

No. I did not denounce it because the subject/thread was closed by the time I read it. I do thoroughly agree with Cindy though. Frankly, I think that the current president is a grand panderer and I’m not sure if I agree or disagree with many of his views because they are too fluid for me to decide.
