back from st. paul – princess is hailin’ palin

Posted on September 7th, 2008 in Princess Wears Prada by hireheels

A very seasoned female competitor in the pr world once told me: “You’ve got the best instincts in the business.” Tell me more—I wanted to say—not about me, about you! But that would conclude our brief sisterhood moment.

Back then I remember thinking, Ill take it! When you work for yourself, you form multi-textured filters and multi-layered armor, but few mentors. And typically, through no fault of our own, we women rarely stay on a straight and narrow path to career nirvana. My own has been as confusing and meandering as the labyrinthian, white-walled center of Mykonos. Bottom line: life gets in the way.
princess_wears_prada_byline
So, when the veiled warnings via phone and email started coming from life-long friends and colleagues – one for whom I’ve given over a half-dozen references for employment—I was really miffed. Their instant abandonment of sisterhood and their rush to judge and even insult the Alaskan working mother of five personally shocked and offended me. I’ve decided to ignore them and instead issue the following:

You don’t need to go to this blog. You don’t need to read this post. You don’t need to comment. You don’t need to think. But if you’re going to attack…me or Sarah Palin, you had better think again. All your attacks do is create a sympathetic figure in Sarah Palin (and a staunch defender in me). But trust me, she doesn’t need sympathy. And I don’t need your advice. I am in the activism trenches, where I will remain until November. So do keep on attacking. You just may make history—whether you want to or not!

My snap decision to go to St. Paul has brought me peace and clarity. I am not an opinion peddler, just an intuitive working gal who’s running with her life-nurtured instincts. Indeed, I’m ignoring the latest blogosphere-bred, book-banning charges leveled against the “bible-thumping beauty queen” and going with my non-pregnant gut.

I loved her! No, I f—kg loved her.

To put it in perspective, I need to recount that electrifying night in St. Paul, Minnesota. Governor Palin did more than electrify. She turned the Republican-filled Excel Center into a nuclear reactor!

I arrived fashionably late to the luxury box hosted by former HP diva Carly Fiorina.

Hmmmm…decent food, cocktails, well dressed peeps, power networking and paparazzi. I had to remind myself of the actual mission. But as I attempted to slip into my observational mode, I was pleasantly bombarded by Republican power babes. Their biz cards say it all: “Republican Women For Choice,” “National Women’s History Museum,” “Women’s Rights For Today.”

I was clearly a target but found it a welcome shift from my pariah-like status in Denver just a week earlier. And just to be able to dress up again after nearly 6 months of grassroots activism in flip-flops and sweats… well, let’s just say it was a Princess Grace moment sans (coveted) Kelly bag.

The publicist in me was swooning…was that Cindy Adams of the New York Post?!?

The activist in me was confounded…wait a minute…isn’t that Greta Van Susteren’s hubby and Clinton fundraiser (and unbeknownst to him, a PUMA) John Coale chatting up a McCain operative?

The once corporate-ladder-climbin’ power chic in me was freaking out….am I really speaking with Carly Fiorina?

Indeed, this scene was playing out more like Thomas Keller’s Per Se opening in Manhattan— replete with socialites, gossip columnists and political heavies— certainly not a pre-party for the debut of the moose-hunting, Gortex-donning, D-list governor of Alaska. Then again, these social soirées do love their novelties! And, as the token Hillary Clinton supporter in the box— you might say I was one of those novelties. Hmmm…has my status gotten a bit of a “bounce,” I wondered? Being the smooth-talkin’ PR gal that I think I am, I fearlessly slipped into the suite’s outdoor balcony, oozing myself in a pole-position seat right behind Henry Kissenger— yes that Henry.

Then… out walked Governor Sarah Palin.

It was no longer about THEM. It was about HER! She would have it no other way.

Poised, pretty and smart, she had the grit of Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality and the sassy smarts of Geena Davis in ABC’s short-lived series, Commander In Chief, all wrapped into one feisty barracuda package.

And she didn’t miss a beat.

We hung on Palin’s every word, as one missile after another flew with perfect timing and impeccable delivery. I surveyed the box to gauge the reaction from the power-coiffed. To my surprise, I spied the ever-polished Lady de Rothschild cheering with reckless abandon as she rose from her seat hooting and hollering. And who could blame her? Pretty soon the entire place was erupting in euphoric glee and laughter. If you thought the “styrofoam greek columns” line translated well on tv…let me tell ya, it brought down the house in person.

Palin had the touch. She struck something in me that no other candidate, surrogate or pundit has been able to in this entire election season.

Sarah Palin could be any one of us. She knows it. The GOP knows it. The DNC knows it. Obama fears it because he will never be able compete with it.

Women will not blindly vote for Sarah Palin simply because she is a woman. I mean, can you imagine if 97% of women voted their gender the way African-Americans will likely vote their race? That will not happen, because women will vote with their guts.

That said, the planets and stars are aligned perfectly for the Alaska Governor. This I know in my gut.

afterword:

Another raw measure of the night is my brief text message exchange with Sista Christian Louboutin – I think it sums it up just as effectively as my blogpost:

PWP: Rudy is funny though…

SCL: Rudy is a yawnfest ……… OMG – you are in the T-Zone!

PWP: Huh – u c me?

SCL: OMG the orange

PWP: They love her sista…

SCL: NO the orange cloth things. Hillary support sign………Yes, she’s (Palin’s) a pistol

PWP: Sorry Sista – I f–king love her

SCL: Sorry for what? I love her too………Mrs. Palin goes to Washington!!!

PWP: Homerun “Viagra for the Ticket!”

SCL: Yep she’s fertile alright! :) They are going to kill her. Every character assassin in the country will be up her arse by midnight.

Be advised heels: just because we loved Governor Palin’s debut and speaking prowess, it doesn’t mean that the McCain/Palin ticket has earned our votes. We still have questions and we’re gonna hold all candidates’ feet to the fire until November. (er, but Princess ain’t ever votin’ for senator obama)

After the fiasco of a convention in Denver, I am quite sure that the republican convention was a breath of fresh air! I watched Sarah’s speech and also McCain’s speech the next night, I found them both to be very personable, much like HRC, people who care about their country and its people, all people.
I watched as they gave props to Hillary and her supporters, they need us, they know it.
They can sway some of us, those people Obama says he doesnt need and can win without, we have choices to make and we are willing to put in the time to get to know even those candidates from the opposing party.
I am open this year to voting republican, my party has forced me to make this very difficult decision, I am more than willing to vote country before party, I cant allow a man of Obama’s lack of character, inexperience, fraudulent, arrogant, corrupt, racist, sexist, immoral person into the White House, not this year, not ever.
So I have a very important choice to make, a choice that will affect my children and grandchildren, a choice to have Hillary in the White House in 2012, and in order for that to happen I must vote for McCain/Palin in 2008!
The last eight years have been a living hell for our country, I don’t believe McCain will be four more years of the same, I believe he truly wants to make a positive change in the way our country is going, that he wants to clean up the congress and senate, to clear out those who are corrupt and put in real people who want to serve their constituents and not their own political gains.
I will vote republican for the first time in my life, and I will do it proudly, and with the knowledge that I have made a difference in the lives of every American.
We must do all we can to prevent Obama from becoming president, staying home will not insure that, writing in Hillary’s name in most states is either a vote for Obama or simply a protest vote, it will not prevent Obama from winning.
The only way to prevent Obama from winning is to vote for McCain/Palin, hold your noses if you must, but it is the only way to keep our country safe from the likes of the corrupter and his corrupt legions.

I love Sarah Palin too and I totally understand that feeling you’re talking about when I heard her speak. She’s awesome! There’s something about her…..she’s the real deal. Anyway, my Hillary “friends” didn’t like it that I made a comment that it doesn’t matter whether it’s a Democrat, Republican, any party female being put through misogyny and character assassination, that I felt as women we had to speak out about it, didn’t matter who you were voting for. I said it didn’t further women’s causes to let that sexism go unchecked. Boy did I get a mouthful of hateful emails responses that Sarah was stealing Hillary’s legacy and Sarah was pissing on women’s rights and I was too if I defended her. Double standard I say. I believe in standing up against SEXISM PERIOD! I may be a lifelong Democrat, but I will not just defend Liberal women. And I will not join in that joking, laughing, and sexist name-calling towards Sarah Palin and her daughter being done by Hillary supporters right along with the MSM. I will defend against it, no matter the party. I worked hard for Hillary and I’m insulted and my feelings are hurt that now I’m shunned and banned. What goes around comes around I say…..

as always superb. so happy you went, and they get points from all the pumas for treating you as a vip. you are the face of alot of us. I think palin is great. could it be time for a mental exodus of liberal democrats to liberal republicans. i was suprised to hear there is such a thing. all this about worrying about others takes second place to worrying about me. maybe i’m not so nice, but nobody gave me anything and i have worked hard and sacrificed. all the dems bitching about palin are getting to me too, their faux indignation about qualifications or experience, havent we just been on that bloody talking point for like forever.
go palin we are rooting for you ! Reform Washington, get her back on the path of working for we the people !
If they can talk green, importance of diplomacy and get into some detail about managing healthcare costs and improving access, i think i will be one happy gal.

very true: When you work for yourself, for self preservation— you do develop different filters …..That’s why I question the logic in the criticism of Governor Palin. Doesn’t diversifying your experiences or your portfolio make you more diverse and better equipped to cope with difficulties that might come up? What’s wrong with that?

she seems more together than all of the men in the race put together!!!!

  8. on September 7th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

chicas – thank you….I WOULD have reported back sooner, but have been laid up with a nasty head cold…but had i written in immediately, the first half wouldn’t have made it in….so it needed to be a review of governor palin and a reprimand to her critics (which are many and ferocious)….

they miscalculated, again….the only diff is that hillary was prevented from truly fighting back — for so many reasons that now are apparent….well, we fought like hell for her all summer long – from suspension to convention – and, as a result, her favorability went up, her ratings went up, her media coverage went up and her political capital went up….but obama went down…and he continues to sink.

i have no doubt she’ll bail him out again, but that louse doesn’t deserve it….and the democratic party doesn’t deserve her.

finally, there is one singular reason i may be able to vote for John McCain (cuz let’s face – u don’t vote for the bottom of the ticket)...and that is because I truly believe he has an unconditional respect for hillary clinton….i don’t believe senator obama has a pinkie full of respect for her….in fact, i think he loathes her.

that’s another thing my gut tells me ;-)

I am forced to rise above my human ideals and say not now, not ever, leave me alone and go away ! Read it to hear how we can find our strength to rise up and fight for what we know is just not okay.

    Princess,

Greetings from London – sounds like you had fun in St Paul. Would not have mind myself to rub shoulders with Carly and Herny. I admit I have a soft spot for encountering celebrities in the real world!

Watched SP’s speech at home….dunno much about hockey mums, but oh boy looks like she knows how to play hardball! Having navigated myself the investment banking community, I can tell a sista who can kick ass!

So, heads up Mr. Bambi – don’t mess with the messer! Well, I guess uh-ah-mmh-uh Bambi looks like a deer caught in the headlights – kinda cute, if you are into that type of thing. I suggest he officially applies for protective status of endangered species (anyway already granted to him by the media), because let’s face it moose vs bambi – he doesn’t stand a chance! Maybe it is time to have another look at creationism – survival of the fitness does not seem such an appealing concept after all!

It would be just too funny –but actually it is kind of serious because I don’t think Mr Putin, aka With Love from Russia, plans to joint the comedy act any time soon.

So Princess, you say you may possibly be able to vote for McC. Lets face it (and this is the logical banker coming out in me), not voting is also voting. So if you don’t want Bambi in the White H, the only logical consequence is to vote for McC (nobody else is on the ballot to my knowledge). The man is anyway almost more Dem then R, greatly appreciated my many Ds incl HRC, and has more integrity then BO can ever spin!

So Princess, I think it is time to walk the walk and do the deed–and I aint talking abt the catwalk in Milano!

After watching the debacle of the democratic primaries. They will try to do the same to her, but it won’t work this time. She will handle the salvos like a professional & we will get to watch & admire. (Secretly, I bet Hillary admires her!)

Listen – here is all the help I can give you…There are only 2 choices…candidate A and candidate B – thanks Billy Boy for reminding us! Just looking at what went on in recent months, having this man in the Oval office just scares the living daylight out of me and the media bias (cencorship?) is just the icing on the cake.

After four years of this, the Obama system just taken to another level (just we can!), you would probably be ready to vote Hugo Chavez into office, just for the change!

Look at his super-thin resume for a 47 year old one: 2 degrees, 3 yrs organizing (without the responsibilities of a mayor), and ca 20 years of scheming to get up the grease pole. If the Dem big wigs, BO and his marketing machine can’t enlighten me abt his achievements so far – well – I guess then there is a simple msg here – there are none! No change, no fighting corruption, just plain and simple Chicago politics -yarn.
Add the sexism, caucus fraud and a couple of umms, and ahhs – what an irresistible package!

So don’t cling to the old: bitch is the new black, Croatia are the new Hamptons and party affiliations are sooo yesterday – go girl and throw him under the bus! Mmh, umm, oh bambi – ups, I guess that would make him roadkill!
Now that we sorted that – let’s focus on something really important: Been to any cool boutique hotels lately?

In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples.

Something hit me tonight. If the Democrats were really afraid of what McCain would do and that he would overturn Roe v Wade then why did John Kerry and Joe Biden want to be his running mate? In 2004 John McCain was on John Kerry’s short list, just like Joe Lieberman was on McCain’s this year! John Kerry now denies that I think. John Kerry didn’t say it on film, but Joe Biden said he would be HONORED to run WITH or AGAINST John McCain and that is on film! The McCain campaign even made a political ad out of it! If you haven’t seen it you must:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YnigCvLfOc

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSpcxkKlEFA&feature=related

Here are some other fun McCain ads for those who haven’t seen them:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=597YG23mAWs&feature=user

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIn_fFWPaUU&feature=user

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mopkn0lPzM8&feature=user

I would also like to ad McCain said in 2000 he didn’t want to overturn Roe v Wade, and it sunk his campaign so he’s probably just pandering to the base now! He still has problems with his base for supporting stem cell research, comprehensive immigration reform, and believing in global warming among other things! He has a very good energy plan (Lexington Project) which is an all of the above solution from wind, solar, hydro, cellulosic ethanol, nuclear power, clean coal, attacking oil speculators, raising the mileage requirements on automakers, tax credits for lower to zero emission cars(up to $5,000),plug-in hybrids,flex-fuel and electric cars, creating better electric battery, improving power grid, cap and trade system, limited offshore drilling, creating green jobs, etc(may have left something out). Dems say his plan is to drill!(wtf) He’s had this plan since he started running and he just recently added drilling when gas prices hit $4/gal. At that point I wanted to drill too, lol! McCain doesn’t personally believe in civil unions, but he thinks each state should decide! Obama believes in civil unions, but he thinks each state should decide! The Democrats would probably have a much better chance of their women falling in line if John McCain wasn’t the Republican nominee! Of all the times McCain has run he finally got it, it’s almost like destiny!

“the shots @ obama were heard round the world….when the trigger was finally pulled — i knew then it was over for him….she publicly said what millions and millions of us have been saying/feeling/blogging….”

this is the exact thing. Palin said what all of us know. Palin said what even the media knows but won’t report. The only thing she didn’t say is why is it okay for 90% of the black population “allowed” to vote for their own but if a woman talks about doing it, well gee we are stupid or worse.

Speaking of education, I have a master’s degree from one of those harvard class schools… and I run my own successful business in the financial markets in Manhattan so…. I might not be the brightest bulb around but i am no dummy…

I F*&^ing love her too – did from the moment she opened her mouth. and… I tend to detest the born-again types because I was one once and realize how much of a judgmental culture it generally is. In her case, I sense she really believes the stuff and tries her best to live by the rules of it.

I predict MCC and Palin win by a virtual landslide – they get all the GWB votes, plus half the PUMA votes, plus a number of people who just can’t abide Obama…. and then we get a Palin:Clinton race either in ’12 or ’16 …and hire heels we will!!!

Great post Princess – just great!!!!

Hi Princess, thanks for addressing the “deluge of hostile email”. During the past two weeks, I have been yelled at by the husband of one friend to “just get over it”, received an unsolicited email from the O-supporting husband of another friend titled “picture of Sarah Palin” ; I shudder to think what that might have been-deleted w/o opening it; received a round robin email diatribe against Gov Palin forwarded by another friend, and a second email this morning from the same person, the attachment was Gloria Steinem’s recent editorial, which, although I don’t agree with Ms. Steinem that we should all vote for O, she, true to her character, offered a reasoned analysis and did not engage in character bashing. If only O’s “grass roots” supporters would take a cue from Ms. Steinem and conduct a civilized debate. Yes, it is lonely up here in MA right now. The sad part is that these people truly are my lifelong friends, and they are simply unable to fathom how I could have any reservations about O. Thanks Princess, for being forthright and sane in the midst of all this anger.

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
    *** The post-convention map:

After the conventions and the candidates’ VP picks, Obama still maintains a slight electoral lead, according to NBC’s map. Obama has 228 electoral votes to McCain’s 200, with 110 electoral votes in the toss-up column. The changes from last month, when Obama held a 217-189 advantage: Missouri moves from toss-up to Lean McCain, Pennsylvania moves from toss-up to Lean Obama, and Wisconsin moves from Lean Obama to toss-up. We came VERY close to moving North Carolina to toss-up, but until we see one decent poll showing Obama ahead, we’re not there yet. Every North Carolina poll has had McCain ahead, though it is worth noting the RNC and the campaign are finally up in the Tar Heel state with paid media.

The Leftists thinks’ that Sarah Palin is a mirror image of Obama in regard to his political experience, that is why the liberals have been trying countless of time to shatter that image to prevent the rest of us from seeing the truth. What the Democrats failed to realize in all this are the issue that we all know so well regarding politics, and it’s called the lack of values. Despite of the contrast as seems similar on these images, there isn’t really nothing in common to Gov. Palin and Sen. Obama other than their age. By experience, she is by far more qualified in the executive position than he is, much the same in moral issues and by character and leadership…………well do I need to say it? She actually makes’ a great POTUS!

Hillary was in Tampa today, so our local news covered it at 11. She came out and 2000 people were chanting.,”Hillary,Hillary” Men in the audience shouted that she should tell them about Palin, and she answered that she wasn’t getting into that, that the election was about issues.

Afterwards, the reporters got their chance, and asked her if Palin was qualified to be VP. She, very politely, replied that she wasn’t going to respond about Palin, but that she thought it was a good thing. That the Dems. did it in ’84,and although it took them a little longer, it was time that the Reps put a woman on the ticket.

As much as it hurts to see and hear her going out to help BO, she handled herself with grace, and kept her word. Oh yes, and it is hard not to think that underneath she is enjoying this just a little.

well, the reality is with the US deficit ballooning and the weak economy reducing tax receipts further, whoever moves into the White H will have a very limited scope to do anything dramatic. After all it is not the Fed which prints the money, but you have to earn it first before you spend it…

Welcome to the party ladies, as a GOP male I can say we treat women with absolute respect and always have. I can say we love our hockey mom Sarah Palin because of what she has accomplished not just because she has a pretty face. We love strong women not whiners that play the victim card at every perceived slight. John McCain is a true gentleman and pays his female employees better than Obama does and I think have Carly and Meg on his team says it all. Sarah has made it on her own strengths and that is awesome and I was thrilled by her nomination.. Welcome ladies and I salute you!

    Here is the statement boogieman:

The Just Say No Deal Coalition is outraged by
Senator Obama’s lewd attempt to rile up his
audience by insinuating that Governor Palin is a
pig. While some may have found his reference
titillating, we do not, nor do the millions of
    women we represent.

We see a pattern here, as evidenced by a number
of recent vulgarities and sexist innuendo on the
campaign trail, in songs/videos released by two
    of Senator Obama’s high-profile supporters:
Ludacris and Sean “Diddy” Combs and during a
comedic routine by the late Bernie Mac.

Although Senator Obama has publicly expressed
a zero tolerance and frequently denied
knowledge or involvement with such behaviors,
we question his sincerity and judgment in
allowing these slams to continue to degrade our
election process and threaten our society as a
    whole.

Having been called a Princess [Laia] myself while veering North to St. Paul with Thelma and Louise on our way home from Denver, I can attest to the fact that indeed, the St. Paul convention was a breath of fresh air. Feeling a bit off center from having been treated, as a lifelong Democrat, like an evil pariah by my own party for supporting my candidate, Hillary Rodham Clinton, I was unprepared for the warm, accepting welcome I received at the hands of The Other Party. Knowing full well my party affiliation and my candidate, RNC officials and party members greeted us with open arms, courtesy and a respect unseen in Denver’s DNC zone. Denver’s natives and police were the ones who made us feel safe and welcome there NOT our party. In Denver, the malevolence from the DNC was oppressive and intimidating. Regardless of ideology differences, perceived or real, the RNC’s manners at least reflect the fact that civility is not dead, and they respect everyone regardless of personal beliefs. They know how to work together and play well with others. Now, that’s funny…I thought that was the DEMOCRATIC party that embraced those views.

Boogieman, you have zero idea how well I treat women.
I haven’t gone around making sexist comments, like the various dnc people have, but, hey, you want to tar me with the same brush, that’s fine … so long as you recognize that pulling “enemy of my enemy is my friend” tactics is why palin is linked to secessionist groups.

pwp…you look yummy but I’m not feeling your groove.

How ironic that a site of devoted clintonistas has now fallen for palin, the great pretender.

how ironic that a site that has continually ridiculed obama for experience is now fawning over the mayor of a town literally located in Butt-F-Egypt. I bet there is not person on this blog who before Ms.P came along could tell me where Wasilla, Ak is.

you should take down any reference to hillary on this site because she would be insulted.

it took Ms.P six years and six different colleges to get a BA in journalism. mccain was almost last in his class at the academy. this is the dumbest ticket the GOP has ever put forward and you’all are lapping up. Go figure…

In case you didn’t notice only 36 of the 2,380 delegates were black. The GOP is a white party for white people that is why aa are by and large voting for obama. you go where you are welcome. people aint stupid.

S.C. Dem chair: Palin primary qualification is she hasn’t had an abortion

South Carolina Democratic chairwoman Carol Fowler sharply attacked Sarah Palin today, saying John McCain had chosen a running mate ” whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.”

Palin is an opponent of abortion rights and gave birth to her fifth child, Trig, earlier this year after finding out during her pregnancy that the baby had Down syndrome.

Fowler told my colleague Alex Burns in an interview that the selection of an opponent of abortion rights would not boost McCain among many women.

“Among Democratic women and even among independent women, I don’t think it helped him,” she said.

Told of McCain’s boost in the new ABC/Washington Post among white women following the Palin pick, Fowler said: “Just anecdotally, I believe that those white women are Republican women anyway.”

i know policy and issues are important but even more important are things like integrity, character, principle, and decorum. the democrats are screaming and smearing at the republicans, at citizens and even at one another. those nasty smears will reverberate for a long time and nothing will get done. those running for office that do not alienate but stay focused on the objectives are the ones that can accomplish things. it does not matter if they are republican, democrats, and independents. it matters that they have integrity and character. those people should be voted into office. the behavior of the failed leadership of the dnc and many democrats should not be rewarded with our votes.
