my wife was for obama, before she was against him
At the start of the primary season, my wife and I, both African-Americans and life-long Democrats, discovered we were in different corners. I was in Hillary Clinton’s corner, while my wife was in Barack Obama’s. I don’t recall exactly how our politically heartwarming discussion began, but since I am the one who’s writing this blog entry, I’ll blame my wife with landing the first salvo.
“What do you think about Barack Obama?,” my wife queried. I knew I was about to enter the twilight zone. I didn’t really want to answer. I was in a no-win situation. My marriage was doomed!
After bracing myself, I said, “I’m a Hillary Clinton supporter because she is the strongest candidate with more experience.” My wife looked at me with disbelief and disappointment because I was not supporting Barack Obama, her candidate of choice.

Then, she probed, “Why don’t you support Obama?” And, I simply answered, “He is just too inexperienced for the huge job of president of the United States.”
My wife proceeded to make her case, saying Obama could do a good job; and a black man should be given a chance; and he represents change.
She struck a nerve with me when she played the “change card” since change is Obama’s main theme. I carefully countered that the “change” battle cry has been used by every politician since the beginning of time, and it is meaningless. As we went back and forth, eventually, I asked my wife, “What is Obama going to change?” Silence followed. Did I win the debate, I thought? Not! From that point, we simply agreed to disagree.
Since then, my wife has become a political junkie. Emails, blogs, websites, books, radio, television are feeding her insatiable appetite for information on the election. She took in the information, and without any further domestic debating, arrived at her own conclusions about Obama’s candidacy. She is a changed person. She is no longer an Obama supporter. Now, that’s change you can believe in.
Here is a summary of my wife’s transformation:
Step 1: Barack Obama should be president of the United States.
Step 2: Hillary Clinton is a much stronger candidate, but she hoped that Barack Obama would win the
Democratic Party’s nomination.
Step 3: Barack Obama is a weak candidate, and she hoped that Hillary Clinton would win the
Democratic Party’s nomination.
Step 4: Barack Obama is a terrible candidate and must not be elected president of the United States.
Step 5: If Barack Obama wins the Democratic Party’s nomination, she will vote for John McCain.
My wife makes it a point to remind me she came to her current views on her own. Well, a happy ending because my wife and I are now are on the same page (whew). Marriage saved!

I think AA support for Obama is heartfelt, but I think both white and AA voters are waking up to the fact that they’ve been “played” by the Democratic leadership in this primary. You and your wife are profiles in courage because of your decision.
on August 17th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
African American support for Obuhbuh is irresponsibly and artificially inflated by the media. A lot of people just won’t announce their true feelings about him for fear of retribution, and some just didn’t vote at all in the primaries, rather than vote for or against him. Just because most of the black people who actually voted, voted for him, doesn’t mean that he got all, or even a majority, of the available, registered black voters.
There was a black talk radio host on Hardball after the Pa primary who estimated that as many as 200,000 black voters in Philly who could have shown up, didn’t.

My AA immediate family consisting of my husband and me and our two daughters started off with the 27 year old daughter a firm Obama supporter, the 37 year old daughter, her husband, me and my husband leaning Obama. Then the campaigning started. After a short period before any voting took place, it was 4 vs 1, with my 27 year old the only staunch Obama supporter. Then came the race-baiting and lying during the SC primary. With a BS in political science, a knowledge of the civil rights struggle and her mother’s part (marched with Dr. King) in the struggle, a keen sense of history and fairness, her progression to a Hillary supporter is now profound and unshakeable. She will be oversea during the election but plans to vote by absentee ballot for John McCain.

Fay seems to be headed right to my island home, but my roommate, our five rescued parrots and I will stay and enjoy the spectacle (hopefully). Sometimes we get geared up with rainsuits and goggles (sand blows in your eyes) and walk in the wind. You can do that up to 75 or so. Sometimes you can lean into it and it just holds you there. Mother nature.
Back to the wonderful guest blog. I feel that aa’s are getting the short end of this stick. It comes out looking like every black American will vote solely on race without ever considering the person running. On top of that, the first time that there is a power play to put a black politician in so high a spot, and who did they pick? Of all the qualified, hard-working, long-serving black politicians out there, they picked someone who will cheat, waffle, and lie his way up. There has been a reaction from non-blacks, and there may be more. At the same time, most of the black politicians who have fought to get in a position to help their constituency, and have served them well for years, were on the podium with Hillary everywhere she appeared. These people have been thtreatened with losing their positions, called traitos and worse, just for standing up for what they beleived was right for the country and for their people. How do you right this wrong? Like having the first serious female contender be Nancy Pelosi.

In the meantime, while Howard Dean “did a jackass proud” with his comments on NPR radio… embarrassing himself, not only with the race card, but with his telling aside about “even women,” Moyers did an interview which has been reviewed by kenoshaMarge. Prof. Andrew J Bacevich really was great talking about his new book, THE LIMITS OF POWER: THE END OF AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM.

ah, soetoro … so, are we still supposed to call HRC’s husband William Jefferson Blythe the third?
translation for the sarcasm impaired - it doesn’t matter one whit to the average american what Barack’s name was at birth - what are you trying to prove by continuing to trot out the soetoro issue?
on August 18th, 2008 at 11:52 am
justzisguy–i actually agree with you. i think the birth certificate/school records thing is irrelevant and a red herring. however, obama did tell a whopper about campaign finance and ethics reform the other night, and that bothers me.
on August 18th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
The birth certificate issue is more than likely irrelevant. The birth certificate listing him as Barry is not his his original birth certificate though; it’s his legal birth certificate, but not the original one. The original one still exists though. If he took Mr. Soetoro’s name, then he was legally adopted by Mr. Soetoro. Who is listed as the father on the Soetoro birth certificate? In cases of adoption, everything is changed but the place of birth.
When Senator Obama took back his original name, he would have had to file a legal name change. One would assume he did that.
on August 18th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Big surprise, but I’m with y’all on the name thing. Non-issue, especially with so many relevant ones just bursting off the vine.
on August 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
What is important about the birth certificate issue is not what can or can’t be found. What is important is what he is doing abou it. He is running for the most important job on the planet. Remember the ” appearance of impropriety”? For those of you who don’t seem to know what that means, it refers to the fact that when something is questioned, the best course is always to answer it thoroughly, just to set people’s minds at ease.
The same issue came up with McCain, because he was born outside the United States. So, He took the matter to the house, and they were provided with all of his papers, and actually made a ruling on his eligibility to be Pres.. The important point here is that this should be extremely easy for Obama to clear up. Whether the courts say he HAS to or not, the proper thing is to ” avoid all appearance of impropriety” and simply come up with the documents.
Then we get to why not. Possible that he can’t. That he isn’t a citizen. What a mess that would be. Or, more likely, he just doesn’t want to. He doesn’t have to, and no matter what questions anyone has, he isn’t about to be bothered.
So, you Obama people, care to speculate? Something more out there that he doesn’t want to draw attention to,or just really couldn’t give a —- what people think.

I think obama knows he is going down-oh and flaming what is your source? your script of koolaid?

FLAMINGLIBERAL, it must be so pleasant in your world. What will it take for you to understand that as long as Obuhbuh is on the top of the ticket, the Democrats have a problem? You might as well tell your sources that if they think naming HRC VP at this point will unify the party, they can stuff it.

Remember if obama chooses Hillary it is a second sign of weakness on the part of the big “o” after allowing her name on the ballot it would show that he was too weak to run and Puma has let the dnc know that its Clinton /obama or nothing!
Is your candidate so weak that he has to have hillary to win then why put him on the top of the ticket? if he is so weak he needs to be on the bottom of the ticket.

Fuzzybear, I am impressed with your constraint. I would not be able to manage that. Obots should not be surprized by McCain’s performance. It is well known among the moderate republicans who voted for him, how good McCain is in debate. Obama does not know the issues well enough to go up against career politicians such as a McCain or a Clinton. These people are not liberal, and they are not flaminliberals as the one poster idenifies himself/herself. There is nothing liberal about these people; they are conformist.

Spending the entire day moving patio furniture and putting up shutters has convinced Fay to go inland, so we are just quiet and peaceful on Anna Maria. Everyone inland be safe. It is Charlie’s track, but not Charlie’s strength.
As to the latest…well, we watched BO in the debates and he is awful, just awful. Watching him speak, extemporaneously is painful. What is also painful is knowing in my heart that HRC has decided not to go for it. That doesn’t change the incredible strength that you have all shown in the last two months.
It may be true that none of this could happen without the internet, but having a good tool means nothing without the skill and strength to use it. I am proud to be a part of what you are doing, and I am thankful that I stumbled into such intelligent company.
Whatever comes next, you have my mind, and limited typing skills at your call. I don’t wonder too far from home, the parrots expect me here at 5 p.m. and I try not to disappoint, but… I do deal with a lot of people everyday, and most of them are amenable to persuasion. Those who aren’t, are generally not worth the bother. So, fellow PUMAs, we have reason to be proud, regardless of what anyone else decides to do. After Denver there is November, and after that, there is a lot of clean-up to do. That part will take some innate brilliance, luckily the PUMA movement has more than enough of that to suffice.

Funny thing sista i went to the andrea king shea show to listen to will bower….and even though I was clearly a democrat and a Hillary suppoter I was not harrassed.
It is sad when we go to the alleged enemies of us democrats we get more repect and better treatment than the obats. well even the republicans at that site agreed that clinton and mccain debates would be more civil and issue oriented than any “race” de-baiting that Obama would give mccain.
Obats beware and be aware the republicans care so little about our phony “racist” allegations that they will bowl right over you. I see a lot of obat road kill between now and november.

Subject: An Explanation
A good story you can tell even your youngest child and they will know the difference between a liberal Democrat and a conservative Republican.
I remember the time that Catherine, one of my daughter Shannon’s friends, when she was little, told me that she wanted to be President one day.
Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there with us - and I asked Catherine, “If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?”
Catherine replied, “I would give houses to all the homeless people.”
“Wow, what a worthy goal you have there, Catherine.” I told her, “You don’t have to wait until you are President to do that, you can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in the back yard and I will pay you $5. Then we can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $5 to use for a new house.”
Catherine, who was about 4, thought that over for a second, while her mom looked at me, and Catherine replied, “Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and clean up the dog poop and you can pay him the $5.”
Welcome to the Republican Party, Catherine.

In mid-sentence, when Obama realized that he himself has far less experience for the presidency than Justice Thomas had for the court in 1991, he shifted and said Justice Thomas ‘was not a strong enough jurist or legal thinker at the time,’” said Long, a former Senate aide whose conservative group works to get “highly qualified” justices confirmed to the bench.

Hillary talked mostly about the platform, she says she liked how it came out.
There will be a ‘real roll-call vote’ with a paper trail. They do expect bho to win. But they did not release the delegates.
There will be Clinton whips to keep us informed on the floor, two from each state. We will all meet on Wednesday at 1pm with HRC.
They were extremely careful with their words, they gave us no big news, no big hope.
But they did NOT break our hearts.
So it goes on to Denver!
sorry t-bone and flaming liberal-the worm has begun to turn! I am so sorry the polls have obama tanking and mccain assendant.
Only hillary can save the party-darn obama wins in denver and the obats committ mass suicide on November 5th when they learn the big “o” is going back to the senate to learn the job he should have been doing the last 2 years….
Sorry t-bone and flaming liberal i will allow you to wash my car and clean teh dog poo up[ from my back yard and if you are real nice I will give you a big clinton/rendell 08 bumper sticker!

Nader predicts Obama to pick Clinton for VP: “I don’t think he’s that dumb,” said Nader.

BTW Rumor has it that there will be no 2nd roll call. Can anyone elaborate or clarify this news.
on August 19th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
unfortunatly democratic party rules preclude a “symbolic” roll call if the tide turns then sorry obama as the paper in raliegh called you today you are the presumptive candidate-a demotion from Presumptive nominee…a second ballot may be held and a third and a forth. Roll call is not tobe mistaken for a ballot.

Thanks Boogie: I think it’s right over me right now. There’s been tornadoes though. That scares me more since there are no sirens or basements like up north.
Just read that Senator Clinton is making emergency phone calls to delegates this evening, but no one knows why. Anyone have any ideas.

on August 19th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Ralph Nader can shove it. Obama can’t win without Senator Clinton on the ticket. It’s his massive ego that prevents him for doing what is best for our country by not picking her. His VP short list is pathetic. By not picking her, he’s just further clarifying that he has absolutely no judgment at all.

I don’t know if any of you other Florida PUMAs have lived down here for very long or not. We were on a barrier island in N.C. for nine years before this barrier island for eighteen years. Fay may come back around and keep nipping. Meanwhile another one is working its way over, but, at this time of year, the African storms usually go up the Atlantic coast, the Carribean and Gulf storms usually come to Fl..
As to why HRC and Bill might be making calls… lets just keep filling up their e-mails with the word on why they can’t turn us to Obama and how we will help them save the party, and the next four years. They have to be hearing it,I have posted them, and will keep doing it until it works, or Denver, and maybe after.
Now, as to the trolls with the nonsense about ” pay for my dinner, etc.” and ” make a great President” .
WAKE UP!!
You are obviously dreaming, and it isn’t pretty. I am old enough to be your mother, and smart enough not to be. Let me tell you something. I have taken care of me and mine all my long life, continue to do so, and have never, and will never let you or anyone like you push me and mine around. If you think that getting some punk with no experience in anything but cheatin and lying nominated for President, is your road to easy street, you are sadly mistaken. Check the polls, you are not winning now, and will not win in Nov. Now lets talk, just a little, about what you are backing, what you think will be so good for you. You don’t seem to have a solid idea of what this country is, or how it works. We may be struggling to make the playing field even, more so for women than for men of color, but it isn’t going to be tipping for any particular group in the near future. If you really thought you were following a “progressive” leader, you would be over here protesting the attack on democratic ideals with us. That or you are blind, stupid, or crooked, Pick one. But don’t ever think that you will put us under your heel or your thumb. Dick Cheney couldn’t do it in eight years, and his thugs were much better trained than yours.
on August 20th, 2008 at 12:22 am
hey gang. abc news says that biden walked back the ‘i’m not the guy’ statement.
i like biden, but how is picking him as vp’new politics’? he’s beholden to the banking industry and he voted for AUMF. obama used hillary’s supposed ‘war vote’ as a club to bludgeon her with every chance he got. apparently, it’s okay to vote for AUMF so long as your name isn’t Hillary Rodham Clinton.
i don’t think o will pick hillary because she’ll outshine him. even if he did, it still doesn’t make up for the disenfranchisement of two states, the caucus fraud, and the undemocratic proportionment of delegates. (it’s teh democracy, stupid!) a vote for o, regardless of who’s the vp, condones all of that. (not to mention that the job is still ‘above his pay grade’ no matter who he picks.)

on August 20th, 2008 at 10:14 am
FRep. Tubbs-Jones is a leader among those that I keep mentioning who have stood up for black america for decades, and were pushed aside when they tried to speak to the real nees of their people and the country..
I can’t tell you which one said it, but it stayed in my mind after the big rally in L.A., : We don’t need hope. We get up and take care of our families everyday, We have lotsof hope. What we need is help.”
These black politicians see that, and backed, wholeheartedly, the candidate that they knew would be good for their people and the country, and race overrode it all. My respect goes out to all of them, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Red. Tubbs-Jones and her family.

No that isn’t Boogie. Boogie knows how to write. Whoever it is, go to Walgreens children’s book section. Buy a manual for 1st graders who need to have extra help in writing. Start at the first grade level. That should keep you busy for a while.
Piper stay safe. XXOO
on August 20th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
I hear ya Boogie. We know how you write. Do you notice how these O supporters can’t read or write. I’m not saying the ones who write their views, I mean the real nasty ones. What? Didn’t they graduate high school that they can’t write a sentence; they can’t spell, and really can’t convey any idea or thought. The only words they know to to spell are the four letter variety, and even that is questionable. What is their IQ? 80? What is their education level, 6th grade?

So what’s new? The party wants to win the bid for the White House at any rate and at any expense to what is right under any moral belief and our constitution, as we know of.
The audacity in these is beyond than Iron my shirt, wash my car, pay for my dinner, etc… This is outright insulting and should not be rewarded of any hint of reconciliation. We have always known that this day will come, if he chooses Hillary. Now is our chance to say “PUMA”.

My heart is breaking tonight…..(rostposted at bitterpolitics and the confluence)
Creator Father Mother God/des
Tonight I ask you to watch over the great soul of Stephanie Tubbs Jones, she has always been the nations good servant but yours first. We shall miss this great champion of civil rights and women’s rights. There is tonight a void in all are hearts where the reassuring voice of your servant dwelt.
Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones was a woman of deep and abiding love for her family her constituents and her country. She embodies the spirit of the American woman. She was a mother and mentor to many her life touched every soul here in our little home. She had the faith to change the world and to speak the truth to power.
As an African American woman she spent her life climbing the mountain and leading Americans of every color to the Promised Land. She worked hard and long not because she had to but because she genuinely loved working of others. Stephanie was a true American spirit. She is loved by all who are touched by her work. This Congress woman is a true public servant.
Now she is free of the body that was too weak for so strong a soul. She has earned her merited crown. She is a protecting angel to us all, wings outstretched to provide the comfort and safety she could never do in her human body. She is a symbol to the empowerment of women all over this world.
Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones has spoken so eloquently of our Hillary and they were good friends. I believe that now above our Hillary there are angel’s wings open protecting her and guiding her. That now Stephanie Tubbs Jones along with Ann Richards are guarding and guiding Hillary through this tough time. We cannot know the plans of the cosmos or divine the stars wishes, we can only hope that your servants Stephanie Tubbs Jones watches over us tonight freed from the labors of earth.
Creator Father Mother God/des here your children we are missing our friend and advocate comfort her family in this time of loss give us strength and carry us.
Amen

So I was looking at MSNBC and decided to take a look at Ms. Mantouvalos’s site. I must say, you can call me an “obamanit” if you must but you’ve got a blog. So I’m expressing myself.
What are all of you about really? I have yet seen any posting citing true democratic reasons for why you are voting for Hillary. I actually was torn between the two myself and later decided I would support Barack.
You’ve attacked Barack incessantly. Tell me…. all of the respect you’ve been asking for Barack to give you as woman, and as supporters of Hillary in general what kind of respect have you shown Barack?? So far I’ve seen NONE.
All of you asking for something that you in turn haven’t given the fellow democrat, since I would think that most of your are democrats would lead me to believe that your “values” are hollow.
As I stated earlier I was torn between the two of them. The reasons were as someone that will be taking care of my parents in the near future, I want universal healthcare… I want senseless wars to end….. I want this economy fixed….. and if there’s time I want prosecution of the wrongs our current President has commited against fellow Americans. These are the reasons why I liked both of them. I can honestly say that if Hillary won I would support her too. It’s not about her being woman, it’s about my values and what I believe in. The fact that most of you are willing to either not vote, or heaven forbid vote for John McCain means the reason you are voting for Hillary isn’t because you agree with her issues, or want the best for our country, your championing something that I still can’t figure out the boundaries of. Please tell us “Obamanits” whether for bettering our country or whether your for something else.
As an aside, because this needs to be addressed. I’ve heard repeatedly about EXPERIENCE. Well my question is what are the rules for being qualified for being President? If it’s just age then none of you should be supporting Hillary since she’s younger than McCain by far. Hell even Bill Clinton was younger than Barack was when running for President. Is it Senate experience, well Bill Clinton had NONE of that. The more I dive into this experience arguement the more I find it isn’t about that at all. There’s too many examples of people younger, or with NO senate experience running for president without a peep about their “EXPERIENCE” within the press or among party supporters. The consitution outlines clearly what the qualifications are to becoming President. If you don’t believe in that, what do you believe in? Are your qualifications obtainable by the fellow democrat? If Barack can NEVER be experienced enough or “down to earth” enough? Then the question of racism comes in. So tell me what exactly do you believe in??
on August 26th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
I don’t understand this PUMA thing (although I wear Puma sneakers, which are really cool). If you look at where the candidates stand on the issues, there is no way that a Clinton supporter should support McCain. Period. Clinton and Obama are virtually identical on economic and social issues. McCain promises more of the same NeoCon madness (whether or not he actually is that right wing in reality, he’s always been very anti-choice, and his economics aren’t good or well-thought out). I love that we have free expression in this country, but let’s give it a rest and align behind the Democratic candidate and stop giving the Republicans more fodder. We must have a Democratic president ASAP, and I don’t want to hear any more nonsense from supposed Democrats who are going to vote McCain. I think you might all be a bunch of Rush Limbaugh-loving Republican plants. And if that’s the best you guys, can do, then you’re even more scattered and afraid then we ever could have imagined. Democratic landslide in November! About damn time!
