what carlin & connery taught me about this elex

Posted on June 24th, 2008 in Manolo Minx by hireheels

Several cold, calculating and contradictory thoughts on this farce of an election have been assaulting my poor brain. It took two completely unconnected, random events—a recollection of Sean Connery and the sad news about George Carlin’s passing—to get those thoughts to stop bouncing and snap into sense.

George Carlin was not just a counterculture phenom, but a lover of language and truth. He loathed weighty jargon that obscured the truth of a thing. George was furious that the condition known as “shell shock” in WWI had its name watered down and down until it was known as post-traumatic stress disorder. “The pain is completely buried under jargon. Post-traumatic stress disorder. I’ll bet you if we’d of still been calling it shell shock, some of those Viet Nam veterans might have gotten the attention they needed at the time,” he said.As for bigotry, George was equally bold. “You can’t be afraid of words that speak the truth, even if it’s an unpleasant truth, like the fact that there’s a bigot and a racist in every living room on every street corner in this country.” It was his way of demanding that we face the fact that racists exist. manolominx_byline

So, in honor of George Carlin and his raw truths, I thought I’d face and share a few of my own:

Truth #1 Barack Obama is not my friend
He’s bad news, from his façade as a ‘transformational’ leader while engaging in old-style political shenanigans to his deft use of sexism against Hillary…from his own sexist behavior to his not-so-stealth takeover of the DNC to his shameful, shameful support of a FISA compromise that flips the bird to the Fourth Amendment (he gets bonus double shame points for someone who claims to be a constitutional scholar). That’s hardly news to us hireheels gals and sugardaddies. And his followers, who blithely ignore any evidence that their dear leader is less than admirable, frighten me even more. People in that kind of enraptured state do bad, bad things because they’re convinced it’s for a special/holy/moral reason. Please, angels, save us from the Obots!

Truth # John McCain is not my friend, either
I say this as someone who really wants to show the DNC that they’ve taken us for granted for the last time. But the maverick stuff is a myth. I can’t ignore hiscaving to the right wing on my bodily autonomy and birth control. Or his record on FISA. Or his painful lack of knowledge of the Constitution. Or his contempt for the Supreme Court when it upholds said Constitution. And especially his caving on torture. I love someone who will be deployed again if McCain wins the White House, so I care a lot about this one. That the nation’s most famous POW would make such a show of protecting the Geneva Conventions and then let the guy whose campaign started the “McCain fathered a colored daughter” rumors in the 2000 campaign define what constitutes torture…well, let’s just say Halliburton has the contract to build a special circle in Hell just for that. (He’s also known on Capitol Hill for his explosive, irrational temper. Imagine the crazy old bastard from your childhood neighborhood with nuclear launch codes. Now hand me another mojito to calm my nerves.)

Of course, the devil I know may be better than the devil I don’t, given that we actually have VOTES from McCain to study instead of cryptic cyphers and “present” votes from Obama. However, it still stinks like expired drugstore perfume that these are our choices. This is where Sean Connery comes in. Remember Sean as the sage beat cop Jimmy Malone in The Untouchables? His advice to Eliot Ness was very relevant to us PUMAs:

What are you prepared to do?

What are we prepared to do to improve the Sophie’s Choice we face in November? What are we prepared to do to stop the enraptured Obots from becoming our new stormtroopers if their leader gets the White House? What are we prepared to do to keep Obama from being George W. Bush with a D after his name? What are we prepared to do if McCain becomes president and doesn’t give a crap about us, either?

I’ll tell you what we do. We fight. Every single day. We remember what brought us together and we apply it, 365 days a year. We pester our congressmen and congresswomen with calls and emails till their staffers know our addresses better than their own. We convince them to honor their duty to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic, lest they lose their seats when we run against them. We haunt our senators to make sure they’ll block any misogynist or corporate-whore judges because they’re more afraid of our wrath than whatever the Washington elites say. We become a force of nature.

Of course, that means we have to arrange our lives so that we can read the news regularly. Post to blogs. Keep ourselves informed about what’s really happening and not just what the blow-dried bobbleheads want us to know. (Never trust a man who uses more hairspray than you do.) Devote time and energy and effort to fighting tooth and nail for our country. That’s a tall order for most of us, who have enough trouble finding time to clean the kitchen, never mind hunt for real news. But if you’re serious, really serious, about making this big a stand, it’s necessary. George Carlin spoke uncomfortable truths. Sean Connery’s Jimmy Malone understood the cost of a blood oath in a deadly battle. And both of them inspire me to ask you: What are you prepared to do?

Personally, I think our best strategy is to help McCain win – despite the awfulness of it. This is because if he wins, I believe we have a better chance in 2012. If he wins, the disingenuous disgusting smooth talking guy will be discredited and the rightful nominee will be more or less absolved.

Likewise, we elect as many democrats as Senators as we can and we fight (not sure how to influence this) for Harry Reid to be removed as Senate Majority leader.

We also stick to our guns about forming what in effect is a third party – the independent, swing voting party…..

All of this takes leadership … which takes time and intelligence … and then it takes money. Just say no deal is off to a good start …but we must take it to the next level.

This is what Howard Dean did starting the moment he lost in 04… and he learned it from the Republicans. We must learn it too.

    … imho.

“ikewise, we elect as many democrats as Senators as we can and we fight (not sure how to influence this) for Harry Reid to be removed as Senate Majority leader.”

It won’t matter if the senate continues to act like the senate in tiberius’ times, and vote to take oaths of allegiance to the emperor – i mean, president.

almost all of our current sitting senators are cowards: obama, mccain, clinton, dodd, all of them – and don’t you dare trot out mccain’s wartime pow status – that lost street cred as soon as he signed on to the military commissions act in 2006 – allowing the president to decide what torture is and isn’t.

as for “this isn’t a vote for war”, well, we know what people said, and we know what happened, and we also know that bush and company were itching for an excuse to go back to iraq – anyone who thought it wasn’t really a vote for war needs to pull their heads out of their fourth point of contact – because we keep hearing that congress didn’t _need_ to declare war, the authorisation to use military force was all that was needed.

frankly, i’m sick of the lot of them – they are all cowards who won’t stand up to the imperial executive and are leading us further and further down the road to a sustained war with islam.

not a war on terror – you can’t fight a technique. did we declare war on surprise sneak attacks from the air after pearl harbor?

    No.

I’ve been there – we aren’t fighting terrorism, all that much, anymore.

we’re fighting a worldwide insurgency – non-contiguous, asymetrical warfare, against a defensive jihad.

the islamic fighters don’t hate out freedom, no matter what your congresscritters and elected sycophants try to tell you.

if they hate our freedom so much, why haven’t they declared a defensive jihad against sweden?

they hate american policies that have attacked the heart of islam – the attempt to set up secular states in muslim countries is a violation of sharia law.

_we_ value the seperation of church and state – they do not, and never have, so why are we trying to force it on them?

we keep supporting what amounts to dictatorships all over the muslim world, because those dictators claim they are helping to root out the extremist muslims, and those dictaorships keep the cost of oil well below what the _world_ market will bear, because the us markets will not, and the dictatorships will lose one half of their consumer base … all the while funneling the profits they do reap into jihadis.

i’d love it if clinton would have the ovaries to say it like it is.
i’d love it if obama had the balls to as well.

i don’t think either of them do.
who do i vote for – none of the above?

minx, i get your point about who you love – but the reality is that if they are serving right now, and will for the next four years (one term of whomever is the next president), they _will_ deploy again.

    it’s not _if_, but when?

Unless Obamarxist (THE UNQUALIFIED AND ILLEGITIMATE CANDIDATE) deconstructs before the Convention, the only way at this time to assure his defeat — which we must — is to vote for John McCain. But McCain cannot win without our votes. Why don’t we try to make him include us along with the Repug social conservatives? What a tap dance.

Let us not vote for every Democrat down-ticket. Please vote for the best candidate who appreciates the center, where the vast majority of Americans reside, and for those candidates who did not support Obamarxist. (Pseudo)Progressives are authoritarian leftists — now we know!

And let’s us “work our hearts out” to defeat this disaster.

Here is a real thing we can do … 1) thoroughly research the write-in laws in the key democratic states. 2) publicize the hell out of the ones that allow and count write-ins 3) get people to the polls to write-in HRC …. Now this would have to be well researched and documented and a risk-reward calculated. In other words, we know a vote for McCain is a vote against Obama but would a write in vote end up that way. It depends on the efficacy of this campaign…. I read over on Clinton dems an ostensible recounting of how it works in NY but I personally would need a LOT more proof. The last thing I want is to write in HRC and vote for the sleazeball. ….

Write-in Hillary may not work either. McCain has another problem. Bob Barr, the Libertarian. Predictions coming in that I have heard say he is up to perhaps 6 percent, and votes for him could swing it to O. Positve visualization – - walking into the voting booth and voting for the lady wearing the beautiful pants suits.

The first thing we need to do is pay down Hillary’s debt. She need to go to the convention debt free. We have to keep fighting every day writing, and calling your State Senators, the super delegates. We need to write and call the “good guys” who are standing up for Hillary, and holding strong for her. we have the lists out. We need to keep writing the newspapers in every town, your own local town and everywhere we see Hillary having to go with him. We need to have presence at every stop that they make, every meeting they attend we need puma power there. we need people with signs, megaphones whatever it takes to let them know…we are still here and we are not going away. ….that glass ceiling is cracked…we can still shatter it in August at the convention……this is the most important lesson we could ever teach our own children and grandchildren it is the legacy we can leave behind….that we worked hard, we worked smart …we worked together that is what the real unity is …….one big puma roar…….

    Off Topic:
Did anybody else get an email today from the Women’s Media Center asking to help against the attacks against michelle obama. I do not believe she should be attacked neither do I believe that Cindy McCain should be attacked. The group did a post on it’s website for HRC, but they never did more. Here is my response to their request:

Subject: Letter from Carol Jenkins re Michelle Obama
I recall that Michelle Obama was one of the worst offenders against Hillary Clinton with this remark:

“If Hillary can’t keep her own house in order, how can she run the White House?”

Furthermore, Jodie Evans, who is a current board member, delighted in disrupting Senator Clinton’s appearances with her CodePink group. I do not like the premise of CodePink to begin with let alone their tactics.

No thank you. I will pass on this request, and I unsubscribed from future communications.

I think they will get the drift.
I think we need a “bad girls” video soon.

    okay here are the details:
unity nh, unity elementary school, 6/27/08, 12:00
unity is right off of i91 which makes it a reasonable trip from springfield ma, boston ma, hartford ct, albany ny, and of course parts of nh and vt. you can map quest it and simply put in unity elementary school in place of “business” unity is a town of only 1,700 so i doubt that there will be a crowd of 10,000. a couple hundred puma’s would make the news and the place will be crawling with national media because this the first appearance of hillary and obama together. if only handful of us show up it will be dismissed, no doubt, as those disgruntled people, but if a few hundred show up……….
so who’s up for this? bring a pair of flip flops.

Minx… I like what you are saying. .
Voting for McCain is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
His views are completely opposite and I think we are at a place in history too perilous for vengeance voting. That’s truly childish anyway, the leadership of our nation warrants the best choice available.
    When it comes to Obama
The FISA vote is hard to understand, and warrants caution, along with this AIPAC pandering (the lobbying group of a foriegn nation)And fanatics of any type are not a good thing… I don’t think “Hilbots” are any better.
I don’t know why you guys keep acting like she’s not a politician. She eats from the same trough, and is very well-fed.

No, I’m with American Soldier on this. Congress is full of weak, corrupt, out of touch amoral aholes, whose world consists of saying what they think the masses want to hear, while doing what gets them the cash to stay in office.
And like you yourself said, none of them has the balls to stand up to tyrants like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, who are using their offices to create TRACEABLE sources of wealth for themselves, and no one calls them on it. Battered wife syndrome, not willing to use the power of the purse, not willing to use the Senate floor as their campaign podium, to demonstrate their leadership with actions instead of words, even against a lame duck president with the lowest approval rating in history.
No, taking on the President is a David and Goliath type task, not suited for most people, but it is the type of tough fight a leader, our leader, the person who would be President needs to take on especially at this juncture in human history.

    alg0rhythm,

Thank you for the compliment, and I think you make some good points, but I think we disagree a bit more than you give me credit for. I don’t actually think voting for McCain is cutting off your nose to spite your face…so long as you are fully aware of the consequences and willing to do whatever it takes to counteract them. That’s why I keep asking, “What are you prepared to do?”

I don’t know who I fear more: McCain, with his right-wing, constitutionally-blind, pandering crazy man B.S., or Obama, with his smooth talk masking misogyny, blank-slate vague “hope” approach that lets people project anything onto him without his commitment to anything, gutless “present” votes and endless caving to the right wing. At least McCain’s followers aren’t whipped into a religious-like frenzy and swarming, mobbing and harassing us like cult members (I got surrounded and held against my will for a short time by cult members, once, so I know how insane that feels).

As for not thinking Hillary is a “politician,” I’ve never thought anything but that. One of my big beefs with Obama is that he’s pretending he’s “changing politics” and his shit doesn’t stink even though he’s engaging in old-school Chicago-style hardball politics. Confession: I respect hardball. I think it gets a bad name. I want a candidate who’s willing to fight tooth and nail for me, and politics is messy and ugly. No problem with me! But don’t base your whole image, your “brand,” on what a new, transformational figure you are and how you’re above that stuff. That’s the language of a conman future dictator.

No vote at all from Senator Obama.

This “flat out lie” was so obvious it was caught at red state.com. team obama said that since the big o worked on the bill (probably walked into the committee room and farted and left) he has a right to claim it was his partisipation that got it passed…He even has pictures of himself with soldiers in it. what a class act.

    Presidential Campaign Cartoon Idea:

Three rows of panels: top with John McCain, middle with Barack Obama, bottom with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

    1. First frame of each panel shows the person standing on a bluff, discovering the United States (large USA-shaped block) teetering on the edge of a precipice.
    2. Second frame shows the person running off to get something.
    3. Third frame shows each individual’s action and new prop:
    a. McCain with helmet, standing atop the USA in a “full steam ahead” pose
    b. Obama with a sledge hammer breaking off the eastern part of the country so that it falls over the edge
    c. Clinton pulling on a rope tied around the middle of the country, dragging the entire country back onto safe ground.

(sorry that I am not focused on keeping HRC the nominee … as much as I want it, I don’t think it can happen without something unusual happening and I believe the Repubs won’t bring out their real arguments until after the convention. So, our best hope is for him to lose … and everyone to realize they should have run the better candidate who can then win in 2012…

I am sorry I will give no time and money to your endeavor; I am committed to the PUMA movement. I look forward to Mr. Obama returning to the senate for the next congress , where he should spend more time learning his job and showing up to vote on issues that are important to the Democratic Party. I would also expect him to keep President John McCain on a short leash until we can run a more qualified candidate in the 2012 election.

Also in conclusion, I cannot believe that you would support a candidate that has manipulated the democratic process to gain the nomination. The party should be ashamed. After our loss in November, I expect a major house cleaning when the DNC headquarters is moved back to Washington DC where it belongs. I will be glad to assist you in this house cleaning and in overhauling our nominee selection process.

I am seriously considering voting for McCain, not in a childish fit of pique, but because I quite honestly don’t see him as dangerous to this country as Obama. In my state, Wisconsin, it will, IMHO be very close.

I just don’t know if after never voting for a Republican in 40 years if I can do it now. Confession, I did vote Green once against our DINO Senator Kohl and if she runs again, I’ll vote for her again.

I own my vote. Not any party or anyone that thinks they have a right to try and convince me to vote the way “they” think best.

Off topic? There’s some kind of ‘pledge’ going around, notably from iownmyvote.com? I hope whoever wrote it will be glad to hear that if it isn’t doing well it’s not that we’re not here or not interested — it’s that the ‘pledge’ is badly written and sounds like surrender! (As does the ad that womencounttoo pac is promoting now.)

They might get better results with something more determined. These pieces sound like figleaves for coming around and getting over it!

If someone wants a statement to get a headcount, how about:

“We will not vote for Obama in November.”

While I agree with much posted here, it is obvious to me that a vote for McCain (or even a write-in) is cutting off our noses to spite our face.
2012?? Are you SERIOUS?? How much more damage can be done by another 4 years of Bush III?
How many people will suffer bankruptcy due to a health crisis and no insurance? How many more of our daughters and sons will die or be permanently maimed in Iraq, or even IRAN if McCain becomes president?? How many more neocon / conservative / christian hypocrite judges will be appointed to the supreme court??

I support the spirit and message of this site, but to hand the election to McCain and his Republican cronies out of spite is not only foolish, but an act of MADNESS!! Please consider these points before we vote in November.

George Carlin did not “pass,” my dear. He died.

Good one! Yup, he snuffed it, old George. Shat the bed.

    As for you, t-bone,

1.) Why is it Obama’s fault she ran a terrible campaign?I’ve already called Hil out on hanging on to that scabrous creature Mark Penn longer than she should have, so there. However, that’s hardly the only factor in this primary cycle. The horrendous treatment Hil got at the hands of the DNC and the corporate media, treatment that was vastly different from the treatment Obama got at a stage when they were all supposed to be neutral, was the overriding factor, in my humble opinion. You’re free to disagree, but I see way too much evidence that the contest was rigged (unconsciously or deliberately, I don’t know).

2.) As for censorship, it’s not censorship unless it’s committed by the government. The Hire Heels ladies pay for this site and have the right to moderate it as they wish. Get your terms straight.

3.) As for your “cowards” remark, shove it up your ass. You’ve shown no respect for the people here. I’ve had great conversations here with people who disagreed with me, and we still managed to show respect for each other. Coming into my house and calling me a coward and delusional is neither showing me respect nor encouraging me to see things your way. It’s punk-ass bullshit. You want respect here? Show it and you’ll get it in return. Till then, happy shoving.

  54. on June 27th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I would add one thing to your excellent analysis. When no one was looking or plotting, a movement born from being revolted by politics as usual, was born. We are more than followers Hillary. We are ordinary people committed to seeking and posting the facts, thinking through what’s happening in our world and we’re committed to solving the very real problems we face as responsible adults. We will have disagreements. We are adults. We are not zealots. We are adults. We are many and supporting the truth, integrity and reasoned solutions to real problems makes us a movement without a leader–for the moment. As long as we do not give in…As long as we do not give up….we will be enough to make a difference and set this country on a path that’s driven towards the good of the many instead of the profit of the few.

    Author Larry Johnson:
But then comes the Rezko trial and we learn Obama was doing favors to get an Iraqi felon a visa to the United States. You know, he is just helping out one of his major fund raisers. Will his story line about a new day in Washington still sound plausible? Will folks still believe he’s serious about not being beholden to “special interests?”
I don’t begrudge Obama trying to help out a buddy. I just wish he’d cut the holier than thou act. He’s playing the Washington game like many others. In this case, however, he may get dirtied up. And in that case he could take the Democrats with him.

A passport for Nadhmi Auchi, the Iraqi billionaire who infused Rezko’s bank account with millions of dollars of cash before the bankrupt Rezko helped Obama purchase the Kenwood mansion he and Michelle could not afford in 2005, may not be the favor that will sink Barack Obama and the Democratic Party he is now corrupting. But some favor involving Obama and Rezko will. I quote a paragraph of the column John Kass of the Chicago Tribune published today:

The last thing Sen. Barack Obama and Gov. Rod Blagojevich needed was that letter written by convicted Illinois influence peddler Tony Rezko promising he’d never rat out his pals.

I respect whatever decision you feel you must make. I simply hope that people will consider that their votes may be a life and death decision for people like my brother, not to mention those who might become the collateral damage of another neocon war.

Your vote may decide the economy and job market which my sister faces in her first years out of school as she tries to find her place in the world.

Lastly, my mother is a brilliant woman who has devoted most of her life to grassroots environmental causes, starting with cleaning up the Hudson river and continuing on to today. Your vote may greatly enable or disable the causes she has dedicated her life to.

I hope that every voter will weigh their choices heavily. It there another way to stand up for this cause without giving America and the world another 4 years of disastrous policies?

Go Girls! I love this site.

Action items – If BHO is going to get indicted, get the dirt out in July, not in October. You think it is impossible that the most politicized Justice Department in history is sitting on an explosive corruption indictment? They convicted Illinois Governor Ryan and have indicted aides to current Governor Blagojevich. Obama fund raiser Rezko has been convicted as well. The Republicans are still smarting from the Independent Counsel revelations of Bush senior’s involvement in Iran Contra the week before the 92 election. You think these folks don’t hold grudges; think again. A hot date and some pillow talk with the right guy in the AG’s office could be just the ticket.

    - Don’t get suckered by the “Michelle does Jackie O” act. When BHO talks about “his wife” without giving her a name and talks proudly about how she is not on the campaign because she is spending her time at home with the kids, he is revealing his true colors, sweetie. At least McCain can respect women with successful careers.

    - Go long. Bush junior has left such a horrific mess that who ever gets elected this year is likely to be remembered as a one term president who oversaw the implosion of the US economy, explosion of the Middle East and spent much of his energy mired in battles with an entrenched and incompetent civil service left over from Bush Jr. The time to start planning for 2012 is now.

I supported Hillary. Didn’t worship her or think she was anything other than an exceedingly competent politician. She had no more right to tell me who to vote for than you do.

And please, can’t you do better than the nose and spite bit? It’s really old and tiresome. It’s also presumptuous of anyone to believe that they know why someone refuses to vote the way “they” think we should. Clueless. But that’s a given in an Obamabot.

Kenosha Marge… you seem anxious to call names. “obamabots” “trolls” are what you call polite people with dissenting opinions, and, I think that’s unreasonable behavior, and I am asking you to stop.
I’m no one’s bot… I’ve expressed dissenting views with both candidates, as well as disgust with their lack of urgency.
I don’t think it is presumptuous to try to understand why people are saying what they are saying, I think it is extremely open-minded.
We are, and should be looking for objective criterion, that can explain what our viewpoints are, so that others may understand them, and if necessary, refute them.
That is democracy, and that is using the differences in opinions to come to a more basic version of the truth.
I’ve heard a lot, of articulate, well spoken, and polite reasons why voting for McCain seems to be simply spite, given that the politics of the two Democratic —–politicians—– is remarkably similar, and McCain is on the complete other side of a lot of issues.
However I’ve heard nothing but name calling from the other view point, often being completely without acknowledgement of the other’s perspective.
By all means, please, illuminate us as to why that perspective makes sense.

Saying that you own the site is akin to using your advantage to control what was said… and Piper told me that censorship was not a part of HireHeels.
That is the way of Fox News, and sometimes Keith Olbermann,(though he’s a lot more right) and that way leads to facism.

    just as importantly,

When you block people out, you fail to listen to people, sometimes people who are trying to help, not just you, but the greater good.
And I am sure that is not what HireHeels is about.

we need to organize in the states that have become must wins for obama. ohio, pennsylvania, florida, michigan, nevada, colorado, new mexico, georgia and virginia. i’ve been studying the map and if obama loses both florida and ohio, georgia and virginia become must wins for him. we must shut him out and make an electoral victory a non-possibility.

I must beg to differ. This is the guy who didn’t support Ledbetter legislation, which would have corrected the flaw in the law that led to the recent Supreme Court decision giving Lilly Ledbetter a whole lotta nuthin’ for decades of sex discrimination at work. He also talked down to a woman from the audience in a talk show who questioned him about it.

t-bone: I appreciate your better efforts. I don’t always respond to every point every time mostly because of time constraints.
